Kitchener introduces new mobile payment app for parking
Kitchener, ON – The City of Kitchener has launched a new payment option for downtown parking spaces through the introduction of a mobile app. The app, known as Passport Parking, will give customers at city-managed parking lots downtown the ability to pay for and extend parking sessions from their phones.
“Adapting to evolving consumer trends is a priority for all the services provided by the city,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “As we all know, mobile payment solutions are becoming increasingly common for a variety of goods and services, and this new offering is a response to the expectations of the modern consumer. With so many technology companies moving to Kitchener or expanding their operations in the downtown core, this is a natural fit.”
Signage at municipal parking lots throughout downtown Kitchener identify where the app can be used. Once the app is installed, customers simply select the lot in which they have parked and choose the duration of their parking session, which can be extended from the app at any time.
“The launch of the Passport Parking mobile app is an exciting rollout that will provide user-friendly options for parking payment,” said Coun. Scott Davey. “This platform is a great example of how smart technologies can support and enhance the City of Kitchener’s commitment to provide value and convenience to residents.”
After evaluating a variety of options in the increasingly competitive parking app industry, Kitchener selected Passport Parking as its technology partner for this app. Passport Parking is used in over 600 municipalities across North America including the Toronto Parking Authority’s Green P Parking network. It was selected for its low cost to customers, compatibility with the city’s existing systems and its flexibility as a technology platform.
“We’re very excited to provide this new offering to our customers,” said Manager of Parking Paul McCormick. “Everyone has had the experience of paying for parking and realizing later that you’re going to take longer than expected. With our new app, you can simply add more time to your parking session from your phone and continue on with your business downtown.”
