'Light Boss' Developer Sheds New Cost-Saving Light On Energy ConservationCambridge Company's Innovation On Brink Of International Successby Thomas Hagey - KW Now! Local NewsJun 28, 2011
Immediate Energy Savings From Local Innovation We see it happening everyday, everywhere we look. Big wattage lights sucking up energy from an already maxed-out electricity grid. If a company or facility is using High-intensity Discharge systems (HID) then they are at the mercy of existing technology and spiralling energy costs. But a Cambridge, Ontario company has come up with a technology solution which suggests that things are all about to change. With the release of their new product line called Light Boss, their customers can take existing lighting systems and realize significant savings out of the gate--no looking back. "LightBoss* is an energy saving controller for High-intensity Discharge (HID) lighting systems," says Randy Hood, technology specialist and co-founder of the company. "Through the use of patented technology, the LightBoss can save up to 40% of the electricity cost of your HID lighting (both indoor and outdoor). One local company with an installed LightBoss unit is saving over $3,000 per month on their electricity costs," says Hood. Hood points out that most lighting energy cost reduction solutions require a complicated, time consuming and expensive removal and retrofit of the entire lighting system while LightBoss simply requires the installation of a new lighting control panel. LightBoss enables users to save money without first having to spend a small fortune.
The possibilites are very exciting because it's not something which requires 15 years to recoup your investment. The ROI is typically 12 to 24 months depending on the number of HID lights and how long they are on each day. LightBoss is currently being tested and specified for parking lot and highway lighting by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) in Ontario. LightBoss is ideal for any installation where energy savings are desired and 100% illumination is not required 100% of the time," says Keith McGlone, sales associate for LightBoss.Typical installations include parking lots, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, schools, car dealerships, sports facilities, and the list goes on," he said.
Local Car Dealership Turns To LightBoss
Ian Murdoch, owner of Waterloo Nissan was ready for LightBoss after the last hike in his hydro bill.
"We have a lot of HID lighting around the dealership. We are required to have adequate night time lighting and that can really get costly. LightBoss has enabled us to install it and use it without changing the whole system," says Murdoch. "I'm looking forward to seeing just how much I can actually save," he said.
Light Reduction Not Detectable With LightBoss your lights can operate at peak illumination during primary hours of operation and then be reduced down for the remainder of the time to provide lighting for security and safety and after hour tasks such as maintenance and inventory. During peak hours of operation virtually every lighting application can have the power reduced by 10%-20%, and the change in illumination will not be perceptible to the human eye!
Using light level controls, LightBoss can also be used to maintain a fixed level of light as conditions change. Additionally, the LightBoss controller incorporates many “failsafe” procedures to ensure steady light output and reduced lamp maintenance and replacement costs.
Key Features:
• Ease of Installation – the LightBoss is installed between the panel and existing HID lights
• No need to retrofit the entire lighting system out
• Variable energy savings from up to 40%, depending on your needs
• Can be manually controlled, or interfaced with timers, occupancy sensors, or light-level sensors
• Ideal for daylight harvesting and load shedding applications
• Manufactured in 20 to 200 amp units, single- and three-phase, 120/208/240/277/480 V, for virtually any application
• Payback (ROI) is typically 12 to 24 months
The developing world is using more and more electricity than ever before. But emerging markets such as India and China are gearing up to be both manufacturing giants and new significant consumers of energy with their more than 2-billion people on the verge of embracing western culture. This considered, LightBoss could be a major global player in saving the planet from the human race.
If you or some one you know has a business or facility which could take advantage from this conservation and savings benefit-rich innovation, tell them about LightBoss. It will help them and help us all to reduce our consumption and addiction to energy. Contact LightBos today 1-888-346-3622 or info@lightboss.com. They will provide a no-cost energy saving calculation for your HID lighting system. No, LightBoss* installs by the electrical panel that feeds the lamps. No replacement of lamps or ballasts are necessary. LightBoss* does not work with electronic ballasts.
Will LightBoss* damage my lights and/or ballasts? No, in fact, the reduced energy used will actually lengthen the lives of both. LightBoss® is designed to reduce wear and tear on lights and ballasts. They last longer and need to be replaced less often.
Does Temperature affect LightBoss and HID lamps?
HID lamps, ballasts and LightBoss are not affected by changes in ambient tempertures, Click here to see a graph charting Lumen loss at temperatures below 35 oC (95oF). LightBoss is equipped with a variety of Nema approved enclosures that are available based on the outdoor conditions.
Who installs LightBoss*? Installation should be by a licensed electrical contractor. In addition to a detailed installation manual, LightBoss* will provide initial and continued support for any installation.
Is LightBoss* a "Hi-Low" system? It can be. However, LightBoss* is the first HID dimming system that offers variable dimming from 100% power to 55% brightness. Power may be reduced incrementally.
Can I use automatic external devices to control the dimming function? Yes. LightBoss* up and down control can be initiated by timers, motion detectors, occupancy sensors, photocells, light sensors and any combination of these devices. We offer and sell these devices in complete systems.
If LightBoss* fails will I be without lighting until it is repaired? No. LightBoss* has built-in technonogy and by-pass circuitry that assures fail-safe operation. In the event of an internal system problem, the bypass circuitry will provide input line power directly to the lighting circuit.
How long will it take, in energy savings, to pay back my investment in LightBoss*? Typical Return on Investment [ROI] is less than 24 months. If you receive energy rebates it is significantly less.
Can I run LightBoss* from my energy management system? Yes, in the automatic mode, LightBoss* will take a 0-10v, 0-5v or 4-20 milliamp signal from an energy management system. Based on the signal sent, any level can be accessed at any time.
Lamps need to start with full power, will LightBoss accommodate that requirement? Yes, LightBoss* is equipped with an automatic bypass circuit. Bypass is initiated when Lamps turn on, allowing full power to the lamps during warm up. After warm up, LightBoss* reduces voltage to the lamps based on the customer selected levels.
