Spring has arrived and bikes are back out of the garages. People are listening to their doctors and to their friends, and are trying to incorporate daily exercise into their lives. For many people cycling to and from work is also and environmental or economic choice. Safety for cyclists on the road is always a concern.

There has been a lot of news lately about technologies that are making cycling on the city streets safer.  I think that two of the most interesting ones are the Valour bike which comes with an array of built in technology including a proximity sensor for cars.  The sensor causes the handlebars to vibrate when there is a car in the blind spot of the car, reducing the need for cyclists to take their eyes off of the road ahead of them. It also has a built in GPS system that lights LED lights on the handlebars showing the cyclists which way to turn.

The second tech development for cyclists is the XFire lighting system which will project red lane markers beside and behind a bicycle at night creating a bike lane that can be seen by cars. Presumable drivers will see the two red lines and allow extra space for cyclist on the side of the road.

Of course, no technology will replace common sense and safety steps that all cyclists should be taking to avoid accidents.
